Export insurance extension
from €120 per 14 days
- 14 extra days of third-party liability cover
- New Green Card, as a PDF where permitted
- Requested online, no visit to the desk
- Also if your current export insurance was arranged elsewhere
Registration at home taking longer than planned? We arrange a 14-day extension of your export insurance online, from €120 and subject to the insurer's approval. The Dutch export registration is not extended with it, as the timeline below shows.
from €120 per 14 days
Collected the car in Deventer, drove it out of the Netherlands via the A1 on white plates with 14 days of liability cover, and now registration at home is taking longer? Two more weeks of export insurance can then be arranged from wherever you are, by WhatsApp, email or the request form further down this page, without a trip to Hengelo.
What matters most is the end date of your current cover: the new 14 days must follow it without a gap.
Our insurance for Dutch export plates runs for 14 days. Typical reasons it falls short:
Is your current export cover with another provider? Through our insurance partner we can arrange a policy that picks up where it ends, for another two weeks. That, too, depends on the insurer's approval.
In this example you drive from Deventer to Hengelo on day 1, deregister the car there and start the insurance the same day, as we recommend on the export insurance page.
| When | Export insurance | Dutch export registration |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | First 14 days of cover start | Car deregistered; its 14 days start |
| Day 2 to 13 | Covered; if plans slip, request the extension | Driving allowed, never past the APK expiry date |
| Day 14 | Last day of the first cover | Last day on Dutch public roads |
| Day 15 to 28 | New 14 days, after the insurer's approval | Not extended: in the Netherlands only on a trailer or car transporter |
Did your insurance start on another day, or was it arranged elsewhere? Then count from the end date on your Green Card or policy, not from day 1.
An extension only moves the end date of your insurance. The Dutch export registration keeps its own period: it starts on deregistration day, lasts 14 days and ends earlier if the car's APK (Dutch roadworthiness test) runs out first (source: RDW). So in the timeline, day 14 is the last day the car may be driven in the Netherlands, even if insured until day 28. Counting the 14 days: see Dutch export plates and the RDW page on exporting a vehicle.
If the car is abroad after day 14, that country decides whether it may be driven on a Dutch export registration; the rules differ per country. Check them first, and read your policy and new Green Card to see which countries and drivers are covered.
That is also how you extend a Green Card: every extension brings a new card. There is no fixed processing time, so ask early.
Each extra 14-day period costs from €120, or more for a heavy or non-standard vehicle. Cover until day 42 means two extensions, each with its own approval and a price you hear in advance.

The form opens with "Extend export insurance" already chosen. As the preferred date, enter the end date of your current cover. That tells us where the new cover has to follow on. Your Green Card or policy goes separately, as a photo or PDF by WhatsApp or email.

No. Only the insurance gets 14 more days. Driving on Dutch public roads remains limited to 14 days from deregistration, ending earlier if the APK (Dutch roadworthiness test) runs out first.
That is up to the country the car is in, and countries treat a Dutch export registration differently. Your policy and Green Card also show where, and with which driver, you are covered. Check both before the car is driven after the first 14 days.
Yes, 14 days at a time. The insurer decides on each step separately, and approval is never certain in advance.
As soon as you see that registration, transport or the buyer is running late, and in any case well before the end date on your Green Card. That leaves time for the insurer's approval and your payment, so the new cover can follow on.
By bank transfer, after the insurer has said yes and we have given you the price.
