Deventer sits on the A1, the motorway that runs east through Twente to the German border, where it continues as the German A30. Driving a car from Deventer to Germany, Poland or further east on the A1 takes you past Hengelo. Our RDW-approved export desk in Hengelo (Overijssel) is about 1 km from the same A1. You deregister the car there, collect white export plates and temporary insurance, and continue towards the border.

Auto Export Deventer has no desk inside the city. Everything is handled at Slachthuisweg 135 in Hengelo, or remotely by post. This page explains what it costs, what to bring and how to plan the drive.

Car export from Deventer and Salland

Whether the car is parked in the city centre, in Colmschate or Schalkhaar, or in a Salland town such as Raalte or Olst-Wijhe, the route to our desk is the same A1.

Exporting a car from the Netherlands means that it is deregistered from the Dutch vehicle register for export. After that, the Dutch owner no longer has to insure the car, keep the APK valid or pay motor vehicle tax (source: RDW).

As the buyer, you receive the export certificate, also called registration certificate part II, together with the registration card (kentekencard) with one corner cut off. You need these papers to register the car at home. The seller receives the indemnification certificate (vrijwaringsbewijs), which proves that the Dutch registration has ended.

We are an RDW-approved export company, not the RDW itself. We arrange the export documents, the Dutch export plates and the temporary export insurance with Green Card.

Pick everything up on the A1

From the Brink in Deventer it is about 48 km to our desk, roughly 40 to 45 minutes via the A1. The desk is about 1 km from the motorway, with the exit via the Bornsestraat. Afterwards you are quickly back on the A1. Bad Bentheim, just across the German border, is about 35 km from the desk, roughly 30 minutes.

With complete documents, a standard application is usually ready in about 15 minutes. Please call or message us about 20 minutes before you arrive, which is roughly halfway along the drive.

What does it cost?

There are three packages. If the car leaves on its own wheels, the complete export package is the standard choice. If it goes on a trailer or car transporter, that car usually needs no driving insurance, but the export document is still required.

Plan your drive home

  1. Fix the deregistration day. The 14 days in which you may drive on Dutch roads start on that day, so only deregister the car for export once your departure date is set.
  2. Check the APK expiry date. The export registration is valid for 14 days, but never beyond the APK. Without a valid APK the car may not be driven on public roads.
  3. Match the insurance start date to your departure. For the policy we need the destination, the route and details of the policyholder and the driver.
  4. Check the rules on your route. The rules for a Dutch export registration differ per country. Your policy and Green Card show where you are insured.
  5. Bring the documents. ID of the person the export is registered to, the registration card with its code, the yellow plates, the current mileage and the buyer's full foreign address.
  6. Drive to Hengelo, then on to the border. After deregistration you leave with white plates and the Green Card.

Heading outside the EU and EFTA? A customs export declaration (EX-A) may also be needed. This is available on request, so contact us beforehand.

Which vehicles can be exported?

Besides cars we handle vans and commercial vehicles, motorhomes, caravans, trailers, motorcycles, scooters, mopeds and trucks. A car gets two white plates; a motorcycle, scooter, moped, caravan or trailer has one, at the rear. Heavy or non-standard vehicles, such as trucks, heavy motorhomes or semi-trailers, are priced on request.

No yellow plates left? Have new plates made by an approved number plate manufacturer first, because the plates are handed in on export.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an export desk in Deventer itself?

No. The desk of Auto Export Deventer is at Slachthuisweg 135 in Hengelo, about 48 km from the Brink. If you cannot come, the export can also be arranged remotely. The yellow Dutch plates are then sent to us by post or courier.

Can I drive the car home after deregistration?

After deregistration you may drive on Dutch public roads for 14 more days, with white export plates, a valid APK (Dutch roadworthiness test) and insurance. Rules for a Dutch export registration abroad differ per country, so check your destination and every country you pass through before you leave.

How long does it take at the desk?

With complete documents, a standard application is usually ready in about 15 minutes. If something is missing, such as the registration card or one of the plates, it takes longer.

How can I pay?

In cash or by bank transfer. You always know the price before we start.

I cannot travel to the Netherlands myself. What now?

According to the RDW, a contact person in the Netherlands may arrange the export for you. Call or message us first, so we can tell you which details we need from you and your contact person.

Can I get a BPM refund when I export?

Whoever exports a car can sometimes reclaim part of the BPM, the Dutch registration tax, from the Belastingdienst under its own conditions. We do not offer this as a service; the Belastingdienst page is listed in the sources below.
