Extend export insurance by two weeks: planning days 15 to 28
Registration at home taking longer than planned? We arrange a 14-day extension of your export insurance online, from €120 and subject to the insurer's approval. The Dutch export registration is not extended with it, as the timeline below shows.
Collected the car in Deventer, drove it out of the Netherlands via the A1 on white plates with 14 days of liability cover, and now registration at home is taking longer? Two more weeks of export insurance can then be arranged remotely, through the form below, WhatsApp or email, without a trip to Hengelo.
What matters most is the end date of your current cover: the new 14 days must follow it without a gap.
When is an extension needed?
Our insurance for Dutch export plates runs for 14 days. Typical reasons it falls short:
Waiting at the destination. The vehicle inspection, a slot at the registration office or a missing document holds things up, so registration or import runs late.
Delays on the way. Transport to the destination takes longer.
The buyer needs more time than agreed.
Is your current export cover with another provider? Through our insurance partner we can arrange two more weeks that pick up where it ends, if the insurer approves.
Example timeline: day 1 to day 28
In this example you drive from Deventer to Hengelo on day 1, deregister the car there and start the insurance the same day, as we recommend on the export insurance page.
When
Export insurance
Dutch export registration
Day 1
First 14 days of cover start
Car deregistered; its 14 days start
Day 2 to 13
Covered; if plans slip, request the extension
Driving allowed, never past the APK expiry date
Day 14
Last day of the first cover
Last day on Dutch public roads
Day 15 to 28
New 14 days, after the insurer's approval
Not extended: in the Netherlands only on a trailer or car transporter
Did your insurance start on another day, or was it arranged elsewhere? Then count from the end date on your Green Card or policy.
What the extension does not change
An extension only moves the end date of your insurance. The Dutch export registration keeps its own period: it starts on deregistration day, lasts 14 days and ends earlier if the car's APK (Dutch roadworthiness test) runs out first (source: RDW). So in the timeline, day 14 is the last day the car may be driven in the Netherlands, even if insured until day 28. Counting the 14 days: see Dutch export plates and the RDW page on exporting a vehicle.
If the car is abroad after day 14, that country decides whether it may be driven on a Dutch export registration; the rules differ per country. Check them first, and read your policy and new Green Card to see which countries and drivers are covered.
What can go wrong?
Applying late. Past the end date, the insurer can still approve an extension, for example if the car's APK or technical inspection is valid. Your timeline then has a gap in which the car is uninsured and must stay off the road.
Still in the Netherlands after day 14. Say the car is still with the seller in Deventer because transport was delayed: from day 15, a trailer or car transporter is the only option.
No approval. The insurer decides on every extension, so do not plan your drive around one before approval is confirmed.
Extend your export insurance online in four steps
You send the details. By WhatsApp, email or the form; photos can go via the form's WhatsApp button.
We check it and ask the insurer. Once the insurer approves, we confirm approval and price.
You transfer the amount. Not before then, by bank transfer. No approval, no payment.
Your new papers arrive by email. After payment, the insurance certificate with the new Green Card usually follows within 15 minutes, PDF included.
That is also how you extend a Green Card. Or come to our desk in Hengelo (Slachthuisweg 135); the new card is usually ready there within 15 minutes.
What to send
the end date printed on your Green Card or policy;
a photo or PDF of that Green Card or policy;
the vehicle's registration number;
where the vehicle is now and where it is going;
the policyholder's and driver's details.
What does a two-week extension cost?
Each extra 14-day period costs from €120, or more for a heavy or non-standard vehicle. Cover until day 42 means two extensions, each with its own approval and a price you hear in advance.
Export insurance extension
from €120 per 14 days
14 extra days of third-party liability cover
New Green Card by email (PDF), usually within 15 minutes of payment
Request online, or at our desk
Also if your current export insurance was arranged elsewhere
Starting price per 14-day extension, including VAT where applicable. The price can be higher per vehicle, for example for heavy or non-standard vehicles.
Every extension needs the insurer's approval, and you only pay once we have confirmed that approval and the price. You can extend more than once, each time by 14 days.
Request the extension in good time so the new cover follows on from the current one. If your cover has already expired, an extension is still possible, for example if the vehicle has a valid APK (Dutch roadworthiness test) or technical inspection, again subject to the insurer's approval. Until the new cover starts, the vehicle must not be driven.
The extension covers the insurance only, not the export registration. On Dutch public roads you may drive for 14 days after deregistration, and never beyond the APK expiry date (RDW). The extension does not change that.
Abroad, the rules of the country where the vehicle is located apply. The policy and Green Card state which countries and drivers are covered.
Request your extension
The form opens with "Extend export insurance" already chosen. Enter the end date of your current cover as the preferred date, so we know where the new cover must follow on. Add your registration number and name, and the WhatsApp button carries both into its message.

No. Only the insurance gets 14 more days. Driving on Dutch public roads remains limited to 14 days from deregistration, ending earlier if the APK (Dutch roadworthiness test) runs out first.
Can I drive the car at home while I wait for registration?
That is up to the country the car is in, and countries treat a Dutch export registration differently. Your policy and Green Card also show where, and with which driver, you are covered. Check both before the car is driven after the first 14 days.
Can I extend more than once?
Yes, 14 days at a time. The insurer decides on each step separately, and approval is never certain in advance.
When should I ask for the extension?
As soon as you see that registration, transport or the buyer is running late, and in any case well before the end date on your Green Card. That leaves time for the insurer's approval and your payment, so the new cover can follow on. Already past that date? Apply anyway: with the insurer's approval you can still extend, but the car stays parked until the new cover begins.
How do I pay from abroad?
By bank transfer, after the insurer has said yes and we have given you the price. Without approval you pay nothing. After you pay, it usually takes no more than 15 minutes for the new certificate of insurance and Green Card to reach you by email.
Starting prices, including VAT where applicable. Outside office hours, depending on the vehicle or for postal delivery the price can be higher; we always confirm it in advance.
